After the definitive drainage of the De Zijpe polder and the Haze Polder in 1597, the North Holland elites set their sights on other promising tidal flats in the Kop van Holland. Once reclaimed, the new land could feed many mouths and provide families with a steady income. Economic prosperity in the still-young Dutch Republic, as the Golden Age began, led to population growth and the rise of a wealthy upper class.
