Maaike Drost

A brand-spanking new building was opened in April of this year. Maaike Drost has been a volunteer at the Knowledge and Information Centre for years and she's a real Jill of all trades. She provides a drink and a snack, serves, provides tourist information, gives guided tours in the church and on the terp as well as lessons in the primary schools. She is part of the land usage commission now while the building is temporary closed.

It all started twelve years ago with an ad in the newspaper. “I saw the ad and just popped in. I had always been interested in history and knew everything about the Greeks and the Romans but practically nothing about our own history, the Frisians. After becoming a volunteer at the Knowledge and Information Centre I really began to delve into it.” And now she shares this knowledge with young and old. “I really like giving tours. Of course I've got my standard story I tell but people also ask a lot of questions so it's always different. And giving lectures at schools is – a little scary – but also fun. Children are always really enthusiastic.”

It's lovely here on the island. We wanted to help keep it just as lovely.
