Vroege vogels excursie op het Wad bij Balgzand

Den Helder

Experience a winter morning at Balgzand on an early birdwatching excursion. Cycle along the mudflats with a guide and discover which birds spend the winter here as the sun rises.

Take a look

During the winter months, Balgzand is an important resting and foraging area for large flocks of birds. During this early bird excursion, you'll set out with guides from Landschap Noord-Holland on Sunday morning, just as the mudflats are waking up.

At low tide, wading birds and other wading birds forage for food on the mudflats. You'll learn which species overwinter here, what they eat, and how they adapt to winter conditions. The guides will share their knowledge and stories, and there's plenty of opportunity to ask questions.

Balgzand is normally closed to the public to protect this vulnerable area for migratory birds. That's precisely why this excursion is so special: you'll visit this gateway to the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site with a guide.

The excursion takes place by bike. From the 't Kuitje information center, you cycle along the dike to the Kooyhoekschor, where many birds gather at high tide. The total cycling distance is approximately 5 kilometers. Along the way, you'll make regular stops to observe birds in and around the canal and the Balgzandpolder. From the dike, you'll enjoy panoramic views of the Wadden Sea and the salt marsh. A telescope is available.

– Bring binoculars if you have them
