Parnassia is one of the most enchanting plants in the dunes, recognizable by its beautiful creamy white flowers. The delicate stamens reveal the age of the flower, while tiny, golden nectar spheres provide extra sparkle. At the heart of the flower lies a unique seed mechanism that disperses countless small seeds upon ripening.
Historical use and rarityIn the past, Parnassia was a common sight in the dunes and the plant was valued for its medicinal properties. It was used, for example, as a tea to treat stomach flu, while the leaves served as plasters thanks to their healing effects. Even the eyes were treated with the sap in the hope of improving vision. Unfortunately, due to desiccation, Parnassia has become rare.
A special nature reserveFortunately, the Parnassia is still in full bloom in the Refugium nature reserve of Landschap Noord-Holland. This area is home to many species worth discovering. During a walk, we look out not only for the Parnassia, but also for other special plants, fascinating insects, and various bird species that call this place home.
For young and oldChildren are very welcome to join the exploration. Don't forget to bring your binoculars to get a good view of the birds. Wear sturdy and waterproof shoes so you can walk comfortably through the dunes and fully enjoy this unique nature experience.
