Film: Una giornata particolare

A Particular Story (1977) is one of director Ettore Scola's most acclaimed films. Against the historical backdrop of Rome on May 6, 1938, an intimate and human story unfolds.

While the city gathers en masse for the parade celebrating Adolf Hitler's visit to Mussolini, two neighbors remain at home: a married housewife and a gay man. In the emptiness of the city, they find each other. Their encounter, subtly and poignantly played by Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni, stands in stark contrast to the omnipresent threat of fascism.

Scola impressively interweaves the feature film with authentic documentary footage from that day. Rome is filled with flags and swastikas, while behind closed doors, a vulnerable and timeless story unfolds about loneliness, freedom, and humanity.
