Den Helder

Help clean up the Balgzand coast and give breeding birds a safe start to spring. An active day outdoors, in a place normally closed to the public.

Take a look

The Balgzand is a vital resting and breeding ground for birds along the Wadden Sea. Unfortunately, a lot of waste from the sea washes ashore between the salt marshes and along the dike. String, plastic bags, balloons, and fishing line pose a significant threat to nesting birds. Sometimes even large debris, such as pieces of cars or fishing nets, surfaces.

During this major spring cleanup, we'll roll up our sleeves together to clear more than five kilometers of dike and salt marsh. An active hike through a rugged and normally enclosed nature reserve, with expansive views and the unique atmosphere of the mudflats.

You'll be welcomed with coffee and tea. Halfway through, ranger Chris will provide hot soup; bring your own packed lunch. Materials are provided. Wear warm, old (rain) clothes and boots.

Many hands make light work. Will you help prepare the Balgzand for the arrival of the breeding birds?
