Spot de eerste trekvogels op het Wad bij Balgzand
Den Helder
Join us on the mudflats and discover which birds are returning or leaving. A unique spring excursion in a normally closed nature reserve, led by an experienced guide.
Take a look
Spring at Balgzand means life. A lot of life. Twice a day, the mudflats here dry up, revealing vast sand and mudflats. This is precisely where migratory birds find their food and rest. Avocets, terns, gulls, and even spoonbills feel at home here.
During this excursion, you'll discover which birds have just returned from their winter quarters and which are preparing for their next journey. When large flocks of birds arrive simultaneously, the panoramic view from the dike makes for an impressive spectacle.
Because Balgzand is an important resting place, the area is normally inaccessible. During this excursion, you'll be given access to the Kooyhoekschor with a guide. Around high tide (10:12 a.m.), large numbers of birds gather here.
We'll be setting off by bike . From 't Kuitje Information Center, we'll cycle inside the dike towards the salt marsh. The round trip is approximately 5 kilometers. Along the way, we'll stop regularly to watch birds along the canal and in the Balgzandpolder. A magnificent view of the Wadden Sea and the salt marsh awaits from the dike. A telescope is available.
