Bats in the Wildrijk coppice near Sint Maartensvlotbrug

Wildrijk is a special patch of forest with gnarled trees and a quiet dune stream. An exciting place to walk, especially at dusk!

On Saturday evening, September 19, you will head into the forest for a search for various species of bats in the darkening woods.

Bats are wondrous animals. They are the only mammals that fly. And when the other animals go to sleep, they come out to hunt.

You see them darting through the air past the treetops at lightning speed in search of insects. Various species can be found in Wildrijk.

Experienced guide with bat detector

Bats fly seemingly silently, but with the bat detector of the Landschap Noord-Holland guide, you can still hear them.

Each species makes a unique sound, and that is how you find out which species are flying around here. With a bit of luck, you might spot them in the light of the guide's lamp.

A very fun nature experience for children as well.

Wildrijk is a small but special forest. It is a remnant of the once heavily wooded estates in the Zijperpolder, owned by wealthy merchants from Amsterdam.

Much forest has disappeared, but the Wildrijk is one of the last remaining groves. The bat is an important inhabitant of this area.
