In the past, the sea had free rein and there was an open connection with the Wadden Sea. A dam was built in 1969 for fear of flooding. That was a shock for many nature lovers! Fortunately, it quickly became apparent that a beautiful new landscape was emerging. The nature in the Lauwersmeer area is so special that it has been declared a National Park. There is much to discover in the peace and space of the vast landscape. Special flowers, huge numbers of birds and fantastic views.
