Batterij Begraafplaats

Den Helder

A silent witness to a turning point in Dutch history.

Take a look

The Battery Cemetery tells stories that touch you. Completed on April 26, 1940, less than two weeks later, this bunker was on the front line of an occupied future. Dutch soldiers disabled the gun to prevent it from falling into German hands. What remained lives on as a tangible reminder.

Discover a hidden past

You'll see more than just concrete here. Face-to-face with traces of sabotage, you'll discover how an explosive device permanently disabled the anti-aircraft gun. A section of the barrel, once destroyed, has been recovered and donated to the site by a collector. This brings history unexpectedly close.

Look closely and you will find more

Only recently were German inscriptions discovered above the entrance. They were hidden beneath layers of time. Small details, big meaning. The bunker shows how the same place took on a completely different role in a short time.

For history and heritage lovers

The Battery Cemetery isn't large, but it's certainly intense. A powerful stop during your walk or bike ride. A moment to reflect on what happened here adds depth to your visit to Den Helder.
