De Markies has more than 250 different bottled beers, 12 rotating beers on tap and even a secret stash for true die-hard beer geeks! They also offer an extensive cheese menu featuring 17 different cheeses, complete with a flavour wheel to help you find the perfect beer and cheese pairing.
The café has an authentic feel, with plenty of vintage enamel beer signs. There’s always music playing – often alternative music from the 1980s – but never too loudly. The sunny terrace seats 100 and offers a peaceful view of the theatre.
De Markies also organises a variety of events, including the Leeuwarden Beer Festival twice a year, attracting around 2,500 visitors, as well as King’s Day and Liberation Day celebrations on the square in front of the café. They can also arrange a tailor-made beer tasting, or you can join one of their seasonal tastings, held four times a year. You can even hire a barge for a cruise through Leeuwarden’s canals, complete with a beer or wine tasting.
