Slow down and unwind on the Frisian Wadden coast. Visit the Frisian twin village of Sexbierum-Pietersbierum.
Here, you can still enjoy plenty of peace and quiet, open space, silence, endless views, impressive skies filled with clouds and spectacular starry nights. Walk or cycle through the extensive agricultural landscape or along the Wadden Sea Dike, bordering the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this tranquil, low-stimulation environment, discover the rich history of these ancient terp villages. Just outside the village, the gate of Liauckama State has been preserved and is certainly worth a visit.
You can also visit De Korenaar windmill or the birthplace of Tjerk Hiddes de Vries (1622–1666), an admiral and celebrated naval hero.
Accommodation is available at a hotel and at various bed and breakfasts and apartments, including even a small ‘castle’. Use Sexbierum as a base for visits to the Frisian Eleven Cities of Harlingen, Franeker and Leeuwarden. Did you know that Sexbierum lies along the Eleven Cities route between Harlingen and Franeker?
Or head out onto the Wadden Sea and discover the diverse Wadden Islands of Vlieland and Terschelling. For me personally, a day of sailing on the Wadden Sea aboard a traditional sailing ship is the ultimate way to slow down, unwind and enjoy the moment!
