The centuries long struggle against the sea is still visible everywhere. Villages were built on man made dwelling mounds, known as terpen, winding waterways follow the course of former tidal creeks, and small village harbours once had a direct connection to the Wadden Sea.
The rhythm of the tides never stops, and that is exactly what makes this area so special. It is one of the reasons why the Wadden Sea has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and recognised as one of the Netherlands' most beautiful natural areas. The tides continuously bring in and carry away silt, sand and nutrient rich seawater, creating an essential habitat for millions of birds and fish. At low tide, the seabed is exposed, giving countless birds a few valuable hours to feed.
