Take a look
The Thomaskerk church stands on a high, sharply cut terp. The building began in the 12th century, but three centuries later it was thoroughly renewed in Gothic style. The church was expanded then too, and given a three-sided choir closure.
The Gothic style really jumps out in the south wall, with one large and several smaller pointed-arch windows. In the north wall, you can still spot older wall fragments.
Step inside to see the beautiful pulpit, the canopied gentlemen’s pew with the alliance coats of arms of Harinxma thoe Slooten-Burmania, and the Renaissance tomb slabs in the floor, including one for Benedictus Gerbrandtsz.
A real surprise is the sandstone epitaph for Douwe van Aylva, who died at the age of 28 near Deventer. Most striking on the epitaph: a nude Athena, goddess of war.
