Firdgum
The first attempt to build a replica of a traditional terp dwelling failed when excessive rainfall caused it to collapse. But the second attempt succeeded. It may be a turf dwelling but it stands as strong as bricks and mortar.

The Yeb Hettinga Museum is housed in the old schoolhouse in Firdgum, right on the Wadden coast. Yeb Hettinga was the man who founded an archaeological museum at his historic farmhouse, Camstra State. The museum was later moved to the neighbouring schoolhouse.
Next to the museum, an original terp dwelling was reconstructed. It is a reconstruction of the type of houses that are thought to have stood in Friesland between the 4th and 8th centuries, when there were no sea dikes yet.
The first attempt failed. The original terp dwelling collapsed under the weight of too much rain. But the second version still stands. Like a house. A sod house.
