The resistance monument in Workum was erected in memory of all members of the resistance who died in the fighting against the occupying forces during the Second World War. Three primary schools have collaborated in the realization of this monument.
The Workumer artist Ruth Vulto Gaube made a conscious choice for an abstract design when designing this monument in order to make it clear that the elaboration of this theme is not only about an individual fate within a certain period of time. But about essential principles that are always and everywhere valid. By omitting concreteness, the sculpture group has a universal character.
The monument was unveiled on April 27, 2010, in the presence of initiator and courier Tiny de Jong, resistance fighter Jacob Kroijenga and the school children who participated.
In the new Thomashof district, the street names refer to resistance fighters from Workum, such as Hans Deinum strjitte. Deinum was one of the leaders of the Frisian resistance. As a member of the Resistance Teams (KP), he took part in the famous raid on the Leeuwarden prison ‘Blokhuispoort’ on Friday December 8, 1944.
