At the end of the 11th century, the people of Pingjum built a remarkable ring dike around their village. The dike came to be known as the ‘Gold Collar of Pingjum’ and protected the village and surrounding farmland from the water for centuries. It even held during the great flood of 1825: the area inside it remained dry.
At the end of the 19th century, the Provincial Council of Friesland decided to stop using the ring dike as a coastal defence structure. As the focus shifted to sea dikes, inner dikes became less important. Large sections of the Gold Collar of Pingjum still remain. Today, the green dikes are a distinctive feature of the landscape.
