Getting there

The Wadden area in the Netherlands stretches out over the three northernmost provinces (North Holland, Friesland and Groningen) and is accessible both by car and public transportation. It is only about a one and a half hour drive from Amsterdam to the Wadden region. The Wadden region is also easily accessible from other major cities, such as Bremen, Cologne, Antwerp, Copenhagen and London. By car

To Noord-Holland
Travel from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to the Wadden region in North Holland (eg Den Helder) takes about an hour. View the route via Google Maps

To Friesland
Travel from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to the Wadden region in Friesland (eg Harlingen) takes approximately one and a half hours. View the route via Google Maps.

To Groningen

By public transport

The Wadden area is easily accessible from many European cities by (high-speed) train. These trains often travel to Amsterdam Central and Utrecht Central stations. From these stations you can easily travel further to the Wadden area with regional trains and buses from Connexxion, Arriva and Qbuzz. You can plan the trip via the 9292 website.

From Amsterdam Airport Schiphol there are direct train connections to Den Helder, Leeuwarden and Groningen. More information about these connections can be found on the website of the Dutch Railways.

Flights

Flights from approximately 350 European and intercontinental cities arrive at international Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Schiphol therefore offers the best connections to the Wadden area. In addition to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, you can also fly to Groningen Airport Eelde, Eindhoven Airport, Rotterdam The Hague Airport or Maastricht Aachen Airport. 

To the islands

Ferries to the five Wadden islands are run by various ferry services and depart from various harbours. Travel times are about 20 minutes to Texel from Den Helder, 1.5 hours to Vlieland from Harlingen Haven, 2 hours or 45 minutes (with the fast boat) to Terschelling from Harlingen Haven, 45 minutes to Ameland from Holwerd and 45 minutes to Schiermonnikoog from Lauwersoog Haven.
