Take a look

In the exhibition Fietslân, The First 100 Years, Museum Martena takes you back to a time when the bicycle in Fryslân was still new, adventurous and sometimes downright impractical. Discover how ingenuity and craftsmanship gradually shaped the bicycle into the two-wheeler we know today.

In Fryslân, the bicycle is part of everyday life. For centuries, we have crossed the Frisian landscape on two wheels, through wind, rain and sunshine. Each season brings its own character, its own small challenges and moments of joy.

The bicycle is more than a means of transport. It is part of our culture, closely woven into who we are. Perhaps the well-known Frisian saying “Mei kliemen en kleien is neat te bedijen” was born after a first windy ride along Frisian roads. We may never know for certain.
