ARCHAEOLOGICAL SUPPPORT POINT WIJNALDUM

Wijnaldum

Meet the Frisian king treasures in Wijnaldum

The northwest of Friesland (Westergo) was a centre of wealth, power and goldsmith art in the early Middle Ages.

Remarkable gold finds have been discovered in particular around Wijnaldum. It’s clear from this that the area occupied an important position within the Frisian kingdom of that time. This history is brought to life in the Support Point of Wijnaldum, located in the old consistory next to the Andeas Church. The most spectacular find from this village is a large golden cloak pin (or fibula), Friesland's most famous archaeological object. Starting from the mid-20th century, several pieces of this cloak pin dating from 650 have been found over the years, with which it could be further reconstructed. The Support Point regularly organises activities such as walks to the terp where the pin was found.
