Stinzenplanten zijn vroegbloeiende planten die in de grond bollen, kleine knollen of wortelstokken hebben. De planten bloeien van januari tot in mei. Ze zijn te vinden op historische locaties waar de adel of vermogende bewoners ze in het verleden hebben aangeplant. Deze soorten weten zich te handhaven in een door de mens gemaakt milieu.
Veel stinzenplanten houden van een kalkrijke grond met een goede bodemstructuur, veel bodemleven en een goede mineralenhuishouding. Kleigrond voldoet hier aan. Arme zandgrond is voor de meeste soorten stinzenplanten niet geschikt.

Dekema State was originally a noble residence, where several families lived until 1996. The noble residence and the gardens are now open to the public.
In 1899 is de oude state afgebroken en vervangen door een “slot”. Dit gebouw bestaat nog steeds en is gelegen op het eiland in de slotgracht. Het park heeft een romantisch karakter met elementen uit de Engelse landschapsstijl en een zeer rijke stinzenflora.
