The reclamation of the lakes on the south side of Wieringen has a long history. The area got its first dykes around 1400. Sadly in 1502 the gained land was floaded again. Several attempts were made in 1683 to reclame te land but let to failure. In 1845 a new initiative started and three years later a large part of the Wieringermeer was dry. The soil was still very wet and weak. After digging ditches and building a second mill the soil was in much netetr condition.
The polder seems empty at first. The goverment wanted to fload the area again but funds were missing. Since then farmers used the fertile lands to grow vegetables which are exported around teh world.
